“Joanne manipulates surface texture with incredible virtuosity. Each piece is a collage of found, made and discarded objects which successive waves of painting and sanding take to astonishing conclusions. Composition is the constituent of which she is most consciously aware pretty well everything else is intuitive. the skill lies in the revealing referring to the different layers in each piece when colour tone line and shape gradually emerge to produce extraordinarily powerful, but restrained and understated images. Working in mixed media, Joanne uses everything and anything that works from fragments of mark making to found objects.”

My painting practice is a process of excavation and discovery. It begins with collage, fragments of texture, colour and form layered together to create a foundation. From there, layers of paint and fillers are built up, adding depth and complexity. But the true essence of my work emerges through removal, scraping, sanding, and peeling back the layers to reveal what lies beneath. This process of building and eroding mirrors the tension between creation and decay, concealment and revelation. Each piece becomes a record of time and touch, an exploration of what remains when the surface is stripped away.
